Bodhran, Bones and Spoons.
St John has been playing music since the age of 10. He grew up in the Sliabh Lucra, a well know area through out Traditional Music circles that has its own musical identity. He was fortunate to have played in sessions as a 12 year old with most of the Chieftains who came looking for polkas and slides locally.
Other famous musicians including Seamus Ennis, Willy Clancy, Jonny Leary and Julia Clifford, Jackie Daley Seamus Craigh came to visit Sean O Riada in his home in Cul Aoidh over the years before his death. Needless to say, there were plenty of tunes played and stories told.
Locally around Killarney he was part of a good tight Knit group of musicians organised by Jimmy O Brien of the Bog Oak pub in Killarney. They played at weddings, wakes and funerals in barns, farm houses and the odd busk when required. Following the wren on St. Stephens day was always a highlight leaving Killarney in the back of a milk lorry and travelling to various pubs around Kerry. They finished off in front of the Blaskets with a final visit to Peig Sayers grave where a slow air was played. They cruised back to Killarney the worst for ware. He survived this trip 10 times before departing from Ireland.
Having completed The Hotel Management Course at Shannon St John went on his travels around Europe. Then off to Africa for 12 years with his Irish CDs the only way to continue playing. He arrived in Dubai in 2006 and was on the look out for Irish music. He heard of the group Inis Oirr and the rest is history.
